  1. You are right about it being an addiction as no amount of train purchases seems to satisfy. I have at least 100 engines and 300 cars on my 4 by 7 layout. All DC - I operate 5 trains at once but it is just unitrack with no scenery as I find I don't like anything blocking my view of the trains.

  2. Was wondering what the size of your first complete n-scale layout was. Looking to build something similar and was just curious

  3. I helped a friend of mine build a basic HO setup over xmas for his son and had a blast. I went to Caboose Hobbies here in Denver and was over whelmed. I bought N Scale magazine, and others, with your Marias Pass and truly enjoyed the layout. Since then I've started an N layout myself and buying engines, track, rolling stock etc. It's a very nice break from the scale models I build and there is a lot of crossover in the two hobbies.

I like the work you do, very simple, clean yet with a certain level of detail that grabs one's attention. Plus it lets you learn techniques without getting in over one's head. Do you have any photo's of your first layout? I would like to see an overhead photo of the whole layout. I really like it. I also like your general modeling technique's, you have some great ideas.

Now that I found your website I'll be checking back on a regular basis. I actually found it by viewing your video on youtube. It was nice to see it running instead of looking at the pictures in the magazine. I look forward to future articles.

  4. Nice work on the fork lifts! I've built a few GHQ kits myself (I like the snow plow kits).

When you build forklifts without an operator sitting in them, you might want to model them with the forks down at ground level. Leaving them in the air unattended is an OSHA violation!

  5. I'm looking forward to watching your Council Bluffs layout. I'm currently scratch building a tanker loading platform for my N scale layout which might interest you. I'll send you some pics when I get the chance.

Hey John, I have some older, left side door 63" Unibilt sleepers. If you're interested I could send you some. I have both flat top and highrise versions in N-scale resin.

  8. I am modelling a paper mill on my layout. Have you considered making wood chip trailer. They look a lot like the livestock trailer you have, but have ribbed sides.

  9. I was wondering if you still had the track plan and bench work plans for The Orin line?

    1. There is a published track plan for the Orin Line in the Jan/Feb 2011 N Scale Railroading. I just have a chicken scratch paper plan that I used for myself.

  10. hello! I recently purchased one of your Mack CH16 day cab tractor and a bottom dump trailer, I have just recived it and it is a very nice model. I am very happy someone has decided to use this technology for N scale trucks, I have a soft spot for trucks and in N scale there isn't much variety. I will be buying one of each of your models in the future. I wanted to ask though what are you using for the exhaust stacks on your trucks?

Also might you have plans to be producing any construction equipment? Another soft spot of mine. I would love some more kinds excavators, wheel loader and bulldozers, GHQ is getting harder and harder to find.

thanks so much for your help!

  11. would you please explain the solvent bath you are using for the Shapeway models? I am planning to purchase some of these models from you and wanted to know the how to. Thank you.

    1. I use Bestine brand solvent, pour some in a container, drop the raw models from Shapeways in, and let them soak for hours or days (doesn't seem to hurt the models to soak for days), pull them out, rinse with warm water and scrub with a toothbrush. Let the models dry and work the remaining textures off with a brush or file, or sandpaper, as needed. I then use a white primer from a rattle can.

  12. Great looking layout. I was wondering, do you build or buy your pine trees? They look great.

  13. Love the Kenworth W900L, especially in a flat top sleeper. Wish you did the same in HO scale!

    1. Right, they don't have a phone number, but their response time is good. I have had to get items reprinted i the past, and they are very good about making things right. They typically ask for a photo of what you received, and they reprint your item at no cost to you.

    2. Thank you. I'll give them more time to respond . Great product . I enjoy building them as much as model railroading , going crazy with paint schemes (SHOW TRUCKS)

  15. I have followed your blog for at least three years and have really enjoyed the posts, pictures, and videos of your n-scale model railroads. However, (unfortunately for me) you seem to have gotten away from model railroading over the last several months. At one time you had started on the Council Bluffs Sub layout. Have you made any progress on it lately? I'm looking forward to seeing more posts from you regarding model railroading (in the near future I hope). I also would like to mention that I am a friend of Sylvester Rodriguez, who bought your Orin Line, which is a very impressive layout by the way, you do excellent work. Sly and I are in the same club - the Boothill Model Railroad Club. My name is Todd and I live in Dodge City, KS. I believe you have subscribed to my youtube channel also, my channel name is ts2100 or jts2100, I can't quite think of it off the top of my head. Anyway, I just thought I would introduce myself.

  16. Do you think maybe you can do sets of the modern mirrors like on theT2000 so those of us that purchased some of the more modern trucks in the past can bring them up to speed with there more correct look. Maybe in sets of four or five.

  17. would you or any other 3d n-scale printer be interested in doing 3d prints of cinder block loads.

  18. How is the Council Bluff's Sub layout coming?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey John, I certainly hope you get back to your 3D endeavours. I have also had to deal with some of the fierce competition but as a modeler, I just welcome it. Since you are not trying to make an income with it you shouldn't be discouraged by it--just continue adding to it!

Hey, I was also wondering how the separate tires are working out on your pickups? It seems as though they might be difficult to handle at that size. I was thinking about doing that on some of my upcoming projects that are larger than pickups.

    Take care!

  20. High there I no you haven't done any thing lately . not sure of your status in the 3d stuff any more . but I was wondering if there was a way to make the cinder block loads any cheaper by maybe designing them as solid one peace or some way else ? . incredible interested but to do anything substantial in these would be quite expensive .

  23. Did you ever get your new layout completed? I came across this site quite some time ago and then re-discovered it just the other day.. We seem to have many of the same interests in modeling, with maybe some small differences.. I love grain elevators and grain trains.. I love ethanol trains too. A packing plant and a cold storage facility is definitely a must. I really enjoy reading what you've got here and looking at the pictures. Thanks!!
